Melbourne Grand Prix race

Formula 1 Grand Prix

Managing the world’s most prestigious annual motor racing competition in Australia.

The Australian leg of the prestigious FIA Formula 1® World Championship occurs annually in March, with an estimated 300,000 spectators attending Melbourne’s busy Albert Park. In 2009, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation called for a new engineering project manager to deliver and manage the Australian Grand Prix event overlay.

From 2010 to 2020, The APP Group provided expert engineering project management services for the Australian Grand Prix. The role included managing the nine-week build and one-month dismantle of the 5.3km temporary racetrack, maintaining the racetrack, and overseeing the temporary upgrade of IT and technical services.

In addition, the project team managed the planning, development and documentation of the circuit and event facilities plans each year.

The Australian Grand Prix is one of Australia’s largest temporary infrastructure projects delivered on an annual basis in a fully operational public parkland. The project scope covers:

  • 10 grandstands
  • 27km of mesh fencing
  • Thousands of concrete safety barriers
  • Temporary catering, toilets and overpasses to cater to more than 200,000 attendees

It will be, from an APP point of view, to look at how we can refine and continuously improve, how we can raise the bar and make sure next year’s event is better than this year’s event.
