An outstanding reputation
Established in 1874, Toorak College is located on the Mornington Peninsula educating students from 3 year-old kinder to year 12. The College is ranked in the Top 50 schools in Victoria and has a reputation for an outstanding level of education.
The College’s science facilities were outdated and needed to be upgraded for student use. The College decided to build a new state-of-the-art science facility to allow students to excel in an optimal learning environment.
The preparation of a brief established expectations for the new facility and included the following:
- Collaborative informal and formal learning areas
- New spaces for flexible teaching and learning
An innovative and functional design solution
APP was appointed to provide expertise for the Science and Technology Centre. APP strategists led the design, procurement and delivery of both the early works and main works of the project. The complex building design incorporated multiple components to cater for a range of end-users. The aesthetics and functionality of the building were also top priorities for the project.
Drawing on APP’s considerable expertise in delivering similarly complex education projects, project managers guided stakeholders through the design process. For example, they offered solutions for room layouts to provide optimum teaching conditions, without detracting from the aesthetics. The result is a striking curved and angled façade - an innovative design that incorporates the land’s topography to maximise space in the building.
Project management expertise
APP experts steered the project through the delivery and transition phases, ensuring a smooth process to meet budget requirements and deadlines. During the tender process, APP initiated a value management exercise to reduce costs, enabling the project to proceed to delivery. User-group meetings continued throughout the delivery phase, with APP driving the process. This approach ensured approval of all faculty requirements and avoided time delays.
APP also found solutions to significant challenges included the demolition of the existing building and the relocation of a switchboard covering over half of the school site. In addition, diversion of in-ground services was needed in preparation for the construction of the new building in a live environment.
Construction of the new facility commenced in April 2018 and ended in November 2019. APP transferred the building to the College at the end of 2019, and students began using the facilities before the official opening in January 2020.
The Swift Science and Technology Centre exceeds the expectations of Toorak College. The centre provides an exceptional student experience in an environment designed to train future leaders in the field of STEM. State-of-the-art features include:
- Digital maker-spaces
- Outdoor lab
- 3D printing facility
- Virtual reality pod
- Super-lab style chemistry and biology laboratories
- Teaching spaces over two storeys
The experience and skills of the APP specialists ensured a smooth process resulting in a functional and aesthetically pleasing facility. Students now have an innovative environment in which to learn and excel.
