Delivering education for the 21st century
The University of Newcastle was looking to create a state of the art University campus in the centre of Newcastle which would offer world-class educational facilities and also reinvigorate the city’s CBD. The campus needed to include a partial refurbishment of the existing University House as well as new buildings.
A vertical campus connecting community and education
APP provided assistance in the definition phase of the project by supporting a design competition on behalf of the University to bring world’s best practice in architectural design to the Hunter. With a design in place, the project proceeded to delivery with APP engaged as the Project Manager.
Completed in 2017, the NeW Space campus comprises a new 10-storey ‘vertical’ campus that houses a library and information common, collaborative learning spaces and zones for professional and community engagement, as well as the refurbishment of approximately 1,400m2 in the existing and adjacent University House. The campus has been designed to join the community with the campus through social spaces, connecting pathways and active student learning spaces located right on the street front.
The NeW Space project was jointly funded as an initiative of the Australian Government being conducted as a project of the Education Investment Fund, the New South Wales State Government through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund, and the University of Newcastle.
