To meet the challenges posed by an aging population, changing patterns of illness, and aging asset stocks and the need for greater clinical adjacencies and integration, The NSW Government has invested $265 million into redeveloping the hospital to meet the future health needs of the community.

Delivery across project stages

The APP Group was engaged to provide Project Management and Principal Representative services and oversaw the project from the early planning phase, to design, procurement and various stages of construction.

Stage 2 of the redevelopment was completed in February 2022 and included a new multi-storey clinical service building, expanded Emergency Department and enhancements to a range of health services including medical imaging, paediatrics, respiratory and cardiac care.

The Stage 2A redevelopment saw The APP Group continue to manage the planning and delivery phases. Stage 2A includes:

  • Fit-out of two rehabilitation inpatient units
  • Refurbishment and expansion of psychiatric emergency care centre
  • Outpatient ambulatory care services, including the provision of a day chemotherapy unit and a renal dialysis unit for the first time
  • Expansion of oral health services
  • Integration of community health services
  • A helipad

Partnering for success

Effective communication and building strong working relationships are key to achieving project success. By collaborating with the full stakeholder pool, our team contributes to better outcomes for the project, our client and the community.

Our project team developed strategies which facilitated effective input into the project and established mechanisms to involve the full spectrum of stakeholders. We engaged with clinical practitioners and managers during the design input and signoff process through a series of multifaceted and multimodal forums which enabled us to communicate openly, understand their perspective, and speak their language.

Engaging early and responsively contributed to high levels of involvement from the user groups and ensured that the project was able to progress through the design process with minimal delay.

Collaboration to overcome challenges

With extensive experience delivering complex and high-profile health projects, we understand the challenges inherent to project delivery within a live hospital environment. Working together with the hospital team, we effectively managed disruptions through our collaborative approach to issuing Disruption Work Notices.

We communicated frequently with the client, hospital users and contractors to review the construction program and identify solutions to potential disruptions. By working closely with key stakeholders, APP ensured that critical hospital services could remain in operation while the construction was taking place.

Improving health outcomes

Having played a key role in in the redevelopment of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, our teams became embedded in the project and gained a deep understanding of the vision for the hospital. We have delivered an expanded and more integrated health experience for patients, cares, staff and visitors to the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital.

With the conclusion of the Stage 2 and Stage 2A works, patients now have access to quality healthcare closer to home. We are proud to have been involved in such a significant project that will deliver ongoing benefits to the community.

Working with The APP Group on Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital Stage 2A has been a pleasure. The team has collaborated closely with us to develop constructive solutions to facilitate project delivery and ensure minimal disruption to hospital services. The team has proven their ability to adapt, ensuing we deliver on time with minimal impact to our patients and staff.
