As part of our service to clients, APP operates a dedicated division that specialises in the delivery of strategic and geographically distributed programs of capital work across Australia and New Zealand. This business is called Program Solutions.

How is program management different to project management?

In the simplest terms, a project manager’s job is to focus on an outcome ie:  complete a specific scope within time, cost and quality parameters. A program manager’s job is to step outside of the individual projects to manage several interconnected projects that collectively contribute to a larger strategic business goal, whilst maintaining corporate governance. Examples include re-branding a national or state-wide retail network, upgrade of property portfolio or a strategic realignment of a services distribution network.

Program managers take a ‘whole of business’ view to find efficiencies in the delivery of individual projects so that individual projects can benefit from their interconnectedness, through efficient delivery or lower cost. Program managers also importantly guide the strategy for rolling out projects in “tranches” or “phases” to achieve business outcomes beyond the individual projects themselves.

By definition, roll-out programs involve repetition and it is this repetition that offers the opportunity to create efficiency, specialisation and continuous improvement. At APP we maximise that opportunity by conducting regular, structured lessons-learned sessions as part of the governance of all the programs we deliver.

Our team has worked for many clients from very different industries and they all share one thing in common:  a distributed network of facilities which need a coordinated approach in the interests of economic efficiency and timing.

Projects we’ve worked on include ALDI’s “Project Refresh”, a national program for Westpac Retail, ongoing national programs for Goodstart Early Learning Centres, a network and brand optimisation project for the InvoCare Network and a national electrical upgrade for Woolworths.

Our Queensland team is led by Project Director Daryl Gabagas who, prior to joining APP’s Program Solutions team in 2016, spent nearly 10 years as Development Manager for Mirvac. With Daryl is Project Manager Justine Bailey-Price, who joined us in late 2017 and has a background in design and construction, with qualifications as a Bachelor of Design (BDes) Hons (Victoria University, New Zealand) and as a Project Management Professional - PMI Institute of Australia. And we have Project Manager Adam Omar, who joined us in 2018 from a technical services background in the UK. Adam has a Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Project Management, is a Full Member of the Association of Project Managers (MAPM), APMP Certified (Association of Project Management Practitioner), Prince 2 Project Management Practitioner certified and completed a 3 Year Advanced Apprenticeship in Mechanical & Electrical Building Services.
