The transformation of Sunshine College in Melbourne’s northwest is now complete, with Stage 2 reaching practical completion in June 2020.
Sunshine College redevelopment is complete

APP were appointed as Project Manager and Superintendent of the Sunshine College Redevelopment in 2015 when the Department of Education developed a strategy to consolidate four existing campuses into two expanded campuses being West and North Campus.

With construction commencement in early 2018, significant latent conditions were discovered requiring APP to review and reprogram the WUC into multiple Separable Portions. With this approach in mind, APP were required to prioritise the buildings that were to be descoped to allow for the funding of removal of contaminated fill while keeping in mind specific curricula activities required by the College. Once agreed, the works contract was amended through a Deed of Variation generated by APP, which facilitated the continuation of construction of five main buildings.

Concurrently, the team remained focused on delivering approved scope within masterplan for the College established at the outset. APP in accordance with the Victorian School Building Authority prepared a robust business case that would see funding secured for the remaining Separable Portions together with the original scope of works as promised to the Sunshine community.

In total, eight new buildings were built over two stages across the West and North campuses, including a new STEM building at the North Campus within a live environment.

The new buildings, designed by Patrick Architects, offer a variety of learning spaces including:

  • Open-planned to allow flexible learning and collaboration;
  • Break-out spaces incorporated into each learning area, which can be readily supervised;
  • Connection to outdoor learning areas;
  • Upgraded Staff Amenities
  • Students being co-located in the Learning Community;
  • Easily accessible toilets - from both internal and external environments;
  • Arts/Theatre space with retractable seating;
  • Food tech rooms;
  • Gymnasium; and
  • Woodworks space.

The project team are elated to see this $41 million project through to completion and to be part of the largest government spend on a public school in Sunshine in nearly 50 years. The expanded College campuses will deliver immeasurable benefits to the greater community for generations to come.
