SMEC and APP engaged as Independent Certifier on major Sydney motorway

SMEC together with delivery partner APP have been engaged by Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) as Independent Certifier for Stage 1 of Sydney’s M6 motorway. The AUD $2.52 billion, M6 Stage 1 will connect Sydney’s south to the city’s wider motorway network, providing improved journey times, reducing congestion and removing over 2,000 trucks per day from local streets.

This project will deliver twin four-kilometre underground motorway connections between President Ave, Kogarah and the M8 Motorway at Arncliffe, bypassing up to 23 sets of traffic lights.  The project scope also includes mainline tunnels, exit/entry ramps, shared cyclist and pedestrian pathways and tunnel stubs for a planned future Stage 2 of the M6.

This latest engagement extends APP’s credentials as a leading provider nationally of Independent Assurance services for infrastructure and property. We are currently providing Independent Certification or Independent Verification for a diverse range of projects including Cross River Rail in Brisbane, WestConnex, NorthConnex and Parramatta Light Rail in Sydney, Westgate Tunnel in Melbourne and Armadale Road to North Lake Road Bridge Project in Perth. APP is currently partnering with SMEC on Sydney Gateway and Sydney Metro City and Southwest.

APP’s General Manager for Highways, Bianca Diffin, says: “The M6 Stage 1 will deliver the missing link from Sydney’s south to the wider Sydney motorway network. It will significantly enhance the transport network and service Sydney’s growing population for decades to come. We’re proud to be part of such a transformational project, for the people of Sydney and the wider community.”

SMEC Australia CEO James Phillis said “We are excited to team with APP in the delivery of Independent Certifier services for the M6 Stage 1 project.  This role builds on our extensive track record as a provider of Certification services in New South Wales and across Australia.  We look forward to working with TfNSW and the Contractor Joint Venture to achieve successful project outcomes”.

Work will commence in 2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
