APP, in association with SMEC Australia, was the Independent Certifier. The opening of the new M4 tunnels is a major milestone and a result of great collaboration with all proponents involved in the project.
Opening of the 3.8 billion dollar project was granted on the 10th July, allowing final opening and safety testing procedures to be carried out prior to traffic flow commencing.
The new tunnels are expected to remove up to 10,000 trucks from the highly congested Parramatta Road each day. The M4 tunnels along with the widened M4, which was completed two years ago, will allow motorists to bypass 42 sets of traffic lights between Parramatta and the central city, as well as reducing the volume of traffic on Parramatta Road.
In preparation for the official opening, a series of animations were prepared for drivers to experience virtual trips through the new M4 tunnels to help familiarise motorists with the new entry and exit points.
The second stage of WestConnex, the new M5, will be opened next year, while the third stage comprising tunnels linking the M4 and M5 is due to be completed by 2023.
