At APP, we strive to create a work environment underpinned by a culture of opportunity, respect, and trust. We invest in our people, providing opportunities for you to progress your career by gaining valuable experience across a variety of interesting projects and sectors.
When Rose Ung joined APP ten years ago, it was the chance to work on a diverse range of projects across multiple divisions that caught her attention.
“I joined APP as part of the Graduate Program having recently completed a Bachelor of Architecture. Doing the rotations through each division was a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience and was the part of the Program I enjoyed the most,” said Rose.
After Rose completed the APP Graduate Program, she went on to work on a variety of projects across multiple teams including Risk and Auditing, Property Advisory and later, Asset and Portfolio Solutions. During this period, Rose worked on many significant projects in NSW including the Parramatta Park Capital Works, the North Eveleigh Affordable Housing Project, the Sydney Exhibition Centre at Glebe Island, and Sydney's Overseas Passenger Terminal.
She also spent two years supporting our Property Advisory team on the delivery of civil, roads and infrastructure projects and more than a year working on secondment to a client’s in-house team.
“I found that I had a great deal of flexibility to choose the projects I wanted to work on. A lot of the work is in your control, and success is within reach if you work hard. I took parental leave to have my two children during this time too and APP was flexible and supportive when I returned to work. It didn’t affect my prospects at all,” she said.
Encouraged by her Business Unit Leader and Senior Executives and wanting to gain a greater appreciation of the decision-making process in the public sector, Rose then decided to make a move to the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. Rose ended up working for the Department for four years in roles that encompassed strategy, change management, and transformation.
“Working within the NSW Public Sector was a complete step change for me. While a challenge, taking that opportunity and pivoting into a new area gave me valuable experience in understanding how budgets, processes, politics, government and parliament worked.”
Although she enjoyed her time working in strategy and funding for the Department, Rose was keen to get back to the space what interested her most; the built environment and capital investment. So, in March 2022 Rose rejoined APP as a Project Director within the Asset and Portfolio Solutions division.
“APP really welcomed me back with open arms. They appreciated what I had learn in strategy and government could be brought back into this role and I have since identified new opportunities for business growth beyond delivering projects as a result.”
Reflecting on her progression at APP and beyond, Rose advises anyone at any stage of their career to put their hand up and give something new a go.
“The business is quite supportive of people who are motivated to grow, especially those who are able to pivot, be open to change and learn. You truly do get out what you put in.”
Thank you Rose for sharing your story.
