First metro breakthrough at North Sydney

There has been another breakthrough on the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project with Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Wendy breaking through into the newly excavated Victoria Cross metro station in North Sydney.
First metro breakthrough at North Sydney

APP is the Independent Certifier for the Tunnel and Station Excavation (TSE) works contract which includes the excavation and civil works for 15.5 km of twin tunnels, six new stations and associated dive structures and caverns.

Mega borer Wendy has tunnelled 4.5 km since commencing at Chatswood in January of this year. In June the boring machine passed through the newly excavated Crows Nest metro station. Wendy is one of an amazing five tunnel boring machines working under Sydney and Sydney Harbour to build the project.

TBM Wendy broke through at the new Victoria Cross Station 25 metres below ground. The cavern at Victoria Cross is by far the biggest, being 40 per cent larger than the cavern being built at Barangaroo and the cavern that was built at Castle Hill as part of the completed Sydney Metro Northwest.

With another major milestone being reached, we’re looking forward to seeing the public enjoying the new Sydney Metro. Congratulations to our Sydney Metro teams, led by Jeff Sharp and Rob Nievergelt, on their hard work for the duration of the project, and the myriad of others involved. It’s an incredible achievement.
