APP to deliver business case for Christmas Island residential aged care facility

APP’s Western Australian Urban Development team has been engaged to deliver a business case for a planned residential aged care facility on Christmas Island on behalf of the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) branch of the federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications (the Department). Subject to Government approval and funding processes, the proposed facility would service the Christmas Island community and has significant interest and support locally.

The residential aged care facility would be consistent with Australian remote health and ageing services. The model of care for the facility is a key element in selecting the preferred design and location, and the IOT Health Services team on Christmas Island will be an integral part of this clinical input during design development.

Other key considerations for the project include:

  • The recent release of the Royal Commission report and recommendations into aged care and the implications on design requirements.
  • The buildability and logistics constraints with construction on Christmas Island. During certain times of the year, ocean swells limit shipping and deliveries to the island. APP has engaged a construction consultant with experience on Christmas Island to advise of buildability.

APP has teamed up with SPH Architecture + Interiors to develop design options, Rider Levett Bucknall to conduct cost planning, Emerge Associates to conduct environmental assessment and Paemac to provide buildability advice.

The APP team brings extensive experience in business case development and aged care delivery, and includes Steve Egger, Leanne McKenzie and Mesa Cannard. The business case will be delivered in late 2021 and will include procurement and implementation planning, to support Government decision-making.
