I was particularly drawn to APP as a result of their unique recruitment process, particularly the Graduate Information Night, which was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the Program, the projects I could be working on and the company’s culture. I began the Program working in the Projects team, where I hit the ground running working on both the Parramatta Leagues Club Multi-Story Carpark and the New South Wales Rugby League Centre of Excellence. Since then, I have worked in Infrastructure on Sydney Light Rail, been part of the Urban team and gained an understanding of Program Solutions through my role on InvoCare.
I think the biggest learning curve for me has been recognising the importance of developing emotional intelligence. So much of our role as project managers is about understanding the client’s needs and communicating effectively with different stakeholders, so learning how to relate to your peers and how to react in a variety of situations is crucial. I’ve been really fortunate to work with some fantastic people at APP who have guided me throughout each project, witnessing how they diffuse tense situations and deal with conflict has been really beneficial.
My advice to future graduates would be to put your hand up for everything, say yes to every opportunity, and be proactive! In my first few months at APP, I took on the role of Sports Coordinator, where I was responsible for organising and managing our sports teams as part of our wellbeing initiative, APP4ME. Not only was this a fun way to interact and build relationships in the business, but it also highlights that you are willing to take on responsibility and helps you to stand out from the crowd.
