I joined APP in December 2019 and went straight onto the Grand Prix project where I familiarised myself with the superintendency role. There was a lot of stakeholder management involved - dealing with authorities as well as colleagues, clients and contractors. I found this an enjoyable stint and it prepared me for what was to come.
When the 2020 Grand Prix event was cancelled, I then moved onto my second rotation that I am currently still working on. Karingal Hub and North Blackburn Shopping Centre’s are both large Design & Construct contracts. Coming from a background of limited experience, coupled with the Covid-19 lockdown, getting up to speed on new projects was a challenge, however one that I was willing to embrace.
To learn the amount of information required was intense but everyone was willing to help and assist by pointing me in the right direction and answering all my questions. The project team showed a lot of trust in me, were always available to answer my calls and any queries I had - be it work related or not. They did not have concerns or issues in delegating me more work when I asked for more and as a result, I’m so much more confident and autonomous in the work I’m doing now.
I’m constantly learning, constantly evolving and trying to get the best out of myself. I’ve discovered with APP that you get out what you put in, and this was a big part, especially through the lockdowns. Having the confidence to speak with managers and having them consider my opinion and be handed the responsibility was quite a good feeling and one that I did not expect so early on. It’s neither sink or swim, but somewhere in the middle and truly the perfect balance.
I was lucky enough to experience the full culture of APP before the lockdowns of 2020 and I believe APP really takes care of their staff. There are numerous committees who organise a variety of events both inside and outside of work. I’ve noticed that everyone genuinely cares about each other, and I’m not sure you could say that about all work places.
I’m looking forward to seeing these current projects through to completion as well as continuing to expand my knowledge. In the near future, I aim to able to assist in the strategy and definition phases of upcoming projects and broaden my ability in different sectors like residential/mixed use, commercial and transport whilst progressing higher in the business.
