Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung

Sydney Olympic Games 2000

As a major sponsor of the 2000 Olympic Games, the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games allocated Samsung an existing multi-level car park at Homebush Bay for use as an Athlete Centre and a promotional space.

The APP Group were appointed by Samsung to transform this existing car space, into a vibrant public entertainment area.

The scope of work required our team to:

  • Fit out the lower levels of the car park as an Athlete Centre and exhibition space;
  • Enclose a void between car park blocks to act as a performance area;
  • Construct a plaza and performing stage in front of the car park, which comprised a tensile fabric structure on steel ribs over 12 meters high.

The APP Group were required to remove all semblance of the original car park and fit it out with state-of-the-art modern technology. With this in mind, and within the shortest timeframe allocated for Olympic works, our team managed and controlled over 20 contractors to complete the works within ten weeks. The project included excavating an established landscaped area and bitumen car space to install the massive Samsung sails.

Our team worked tirelessly to implement a facility that became one of the focal points of Sydney Olympic Park. With its enormous sails and public entertaining areas, the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung became an icon of Homebush Bay. With the completion of the Games, The APP Group then had the task of transforming this magnificent structure back into an operational car park.
