Beach Volleyball Stadium, Bondi Beach

Sydney Olympic Games 2000

The Olympic Beach Volleyball Venue was one of the most exciting and controversial Olympic Overlay
projects to have been undertaken. The $15mil project consisted of a 10,000 seat stadium, a
400 seat grandstand, training and warm-up courts on Bondi Beach, back-of-house services and facilities
in Bondi Park. The Bondi Beach stadium was the location of Beach Volleyball at the Sydney 2000 games, with 20 competition sessions over ten days.

Construction of the project commenced in March 2000 on the community benefit works to the Bondi Pavilion and the construction of the main temporary stadium commenced in May 2000. The entire project was completed on time for the Sydney 2000 operations team bump-in during August 2000.

The construction of the grandstand and beach works was carried out in half of the original planned time to
honour commitments made by the OCA under a Master Agreement with the local Waverley Council.

The stadium was temporary and was dismantled immediately after the competition, leaving no evidence that it was ever there. However, the project left lasting benefits for the Bondi community via $1 million of upgrades to the Bondi Pavilion, including improved accessibility, a lift, and painting. These works were managed concurrently with the temporary overlay works.

The project attracted media and public interest about its presence on Bondi Beach. The APP Group managed the project through the politics, site conditions and scrutiny and took a proactive role in managing the day-to-day relations with the stakeholders. The progress of the project and completion drew international acclaim for the success of the venue and quality of the project, both functionally and visually as a world-class, environmentally sensitive temporary Olympic facility.

I wish to commend (The APP Group) for their work in containing the effects of rough seas at the beach volleyball venue at Bondi ... Their services were beyond the call of duty ... (their) contribution in co-ordinating the project management team during the period is particularly laudable. Please thank them for efforts under trying circumstances.
