Australia’s largest military exercise
Exercise Talisman Sabre 2015 was the largest military exercise ever held in Australia, with around 20,000 US and 10,000 Australian troops operating across the north of Australia. It was conducted throughout July 2015, including a period of lead-up training.
Locations included Defence Establishment Berrimah, RAAF Darwin, Robertson Barracks, Larrakeyah Barracks, Bradshaw Field Training Area, Kangaroo Flats Training Area and Fog Bay.
Urgent support request
Transfield Services (now Broadspectrum) is the Defence Base Services Contractor for Australia’s Central and Western Region.
In April 2015 Transfield Services received a short notice request from the Department of Defence to manage, operate and remediate seven accommodation, administration and training sites and a number of ad-hoc staging areas to support the exercise.
Defence and logistics expertise
This scale of this exercise required the equivalent of a suburban city to be constructed within an extremely tight programme.
Transfield Services identified that they would need a full time, multidisciplinary project manager to manage this complex, time critical project. They appointed APP because of our broad skills and extensive Defence and logistics experience.
As part of Transfield Services’ delivery team we:
- Provided Defence with strategic logistic and procurement advice
- Managed the construction of numerous tent cities to accommodate and service over 3,000 personnel daily, including kitchen and messing facilities, ablution blocks and laundries
- Coordinated logistic and life support activities during the exercise, including cleaning services, waste removal, transportation, security, land management and maintenance support
- Managed the deconstruction of the tent cities and remediation of the sites following successful completion of the exercise.
