Smart strategy by APP helped deliver Cairns Base Hospital’s new Cancer Care Centre – one of the key elements of the $446.3 million redevelopment – two years early. Opening of the new Cancer Care Centre in July 2011 has made a significant difference to the treatment and recovery of patients, and means hundreds of patients no longer need to travel to Townsville to receive their treatment each year. APP’s strategy to integrate the Cancer Care Centre - including its linear accelerator bunkers - within the new carpark construction, rather than under the new clinical services building, allowed cancer care services to be brought online two years earlier than originally planned. The strategy also cut three months from the construction program, simplified the Clinical Services Building structure and saved both preliminary and escalation costs.
